The Design of Blood Substitutes: Oxygen Carriers

Two approaches have been discussed as potential methods of creating blood substitutes for use in surgery and emergency blood transfusions. The biomimetic approach focuses on the use of a Hemoglobin-Based oxygen carrier. The abiotic approach proposes the use of Perfluorocarbons as oxygen carriers.
